This week’s 52 Snapshots of Life theme is scary in honor of tomorrow being Halloween. Sadie and I decided to take a walk in a scary new place for this photo shoot. Every year one house in my town goes all out for Halloween. Every inch of the house and property is decorated and people come from miles around to enjoy the scary spectacle. On Halloween they even hire scare actors to jump out at people and chase you around. Even if you don’t like to participate, it’s fun just to drive by and see all the people gathered in their costumes having a good time. Unfortunately, my city usually has some scary plans for that house. A few years ago the owners of the house had to take down all their decorations before Halloween because the city thought it was drawing too much of a crowd. After all the residents complained, the city allowed the house to be decorated the next year, but only if the homeowners paid for off duty police officers to provide crowd and traffic control. This year the city has added another scary rule – no one can park on any of the streets near this house until Halloween is over. Seems to me my town is trying to get the neighbors so annoyed they won’t allow the decorations anymore. But I don’t think the city’s plan is working. Every year more and more houses on that street decorate for Halloween, with more elaborate decorations. I think that seeing the joy those decorations bring to the neighborhood inspires everyone to embrace the spirit of Halloween.

You do look a bit frightened. We don’t like those decorations either, way too scary.

I’m not really that big on Halloween myself, but I think it’s a shame that the city is being a party pooper. We don’t have a house here that does that for Halloween, but our neighborhood has two homes that truly go all out for Christmas and draw crowds from the entire metropolitan area with no problems and the city wisely stays out of it.
