Green – #52Snapshots

I’m sure that this week’s 52 Snapshots of Life theme, green, was chosen with St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of Spring in mind. But I had a different idea. As part of the preparations for my vacation this weekend, I went to the bank to get some smaller bills for tip money. I came home with what felt like a big roll of cash in my pocket (in reality it was $50 in singles) and had the sudden desire to make it rain. Unfortunately, I still haven’t perfected my technique for photographing money fluttering down around my dog like I envisioned, but I think the results were pretty cute anyway. So here’s Sadie with some green.

Mischief – #52Snapshots

This week’s 52 Snapshots of Life theme is mischief and I’ve got a story for you about some on-going mischief in my house. While I was cleaning out one of my closets recently, Sadie managed to invent a new game for herself. I had taken everything off of one of the closet shelves and piled the items on the floor around me. Sadie was nearby, watching me work while squeaking one of her little squeaky balls. At one point she came over to investigate all the stuff on the floor and dropped her ball into a big, blue plastic bowl. She proceeded to scratch and claw and bark at the bowl like a lunatic until I came over and got the ball out for her. Exactly thirty seconds later, Sadie dropped the ball right back into the bowl. This time she circled the bowl a few times, like she was examining the problem from every angle. Then Sadie began pushing and pawing at the bowl, trying to tip it over. After just a few tries, she got the bowl to tilt enough for the ball to come rolling out. And thus “Bowl Ball” was born. The bowl now officially belongs to Sadie and remains in the middle of my living room floor, where she frequently engages in games of Bowl Ball at least once a day.

Purple – #52Snapshots

The theme this week for the 52 Snapshots of Life Challenge is purple. If someone asked me to rank colors in order of preference, I would say purple is my second favorite color. That is why I was rather surprised this week to realize that there is very little purple in my house. Sadie owns almost nothing purple. She has no purple collars, leashes, dresses, or sweaters. She has a few purple toys, but they made for some boring photographs. Then I went out to the car and remembered something. I keep a bag of emergency Sadie supplies in the trunk with food, bowls, an extra collar and leash, etc. I refer to it as her ‘diaper bag’. And it’s a beautiful shade of purple! It was a perfect opportunity to bring the bag inside, restock the emergency supplies, and take some adorable purple photos.

Mirror – #52Snapshots

The theme for today’s 52 Snapshots of Life Challenge is mirror. I was really excited about tackling this challenge, envisioning cool, artsy photos of Sadie reflected in a mirror. I did not anticipate how difficult it would be to execute my ideas. First of all, all the mirrors in my house are either way too high for Sadie or in locations that are awkward for photo sessions, like the bathroom. Second, once I took a mirror off the wall and brought it to Sadie’s height, I realized it’s really hard to position both Sadie and myself in order to get a good photo. Either Sadie moved so that I couldn’t capture her reflection, or I moved and caught myself or the camera in the photo. Lastly, I had to keep changing the lighting, but never quite got it right. If I used a flash there was a glare. If I used the overhead light there was a different glare. If I didn’t use any additional lights, I got more blurry pictures than clear ones, etc. Despite all of my photography issues, Sadie actually seemed to enjoy this photo shoot. She thought the mirror was pretty interesting, although not in the way you would think. She didn’t care at all about her reflection. She sniffed it once, and that was it. Instead, Sadie decided that a mirror makes a very nice place to sit down. Once I stopped trying to move her around to get a good shot of her reflection, Sadie got comfy on that mirror and just sat there happily, smiling at me while I took my photos.

Create – #52Snapshots

This week’s 52 Snapshots of Life theme is create. I decided this was the prefect reason to finally put into action a little DIY project I’d been meaning to try for Sadie’s entertainment – I created a doggie ball pit. Actually I created two ball pits, as Sadie wasn’t really comfortable with my first attempt.

I began with a laundry hamper. I filled it with all of Sadie’s ball-shaped dog toys, along with some other balls I found around the house. Then I put Sadie inside. She was a little scared at first, like she couldn’t quite find her footing among all the balls. She didn’t really sniff around or play like I imagined she would. She just sat down and stared at me. I played catch with her a little while she sat in the laundry basket ball pit, and she did seem to enjoy that experience. But overall the laundry basket version of a ball pit just wasn’t working for my pup.

So I went back to the drawing board, so to speak. I got out the playpen I had for Sadie when she was a puppy. I poured all the balls into the playpen and let Sadie inside. She immediately started wagging her tail like crazy and ran around trying to sniff each individual ball. Although I didn’t have enough balls to fill up the playpen as much as I envisioned, I think Sadie is happier as a result. She feels safe and comfortable being able to walk among the balls, instead of having to stand on them or push through them. She loves running into the pit and digging through the balls until she finds one she feels like playing with. I think she sees the playpen ball pit as a kind of walk-in toy box. So clearly my creation didn’t turn out exactly like I planned, but I think Sadie still appreciates my efforts.
