Today Sadie is hanging out with her penguin pals because yesterday we had the biggest snowstorm of the year and no one wants to go outside. We love watching the snowflakes and admiring the peaceful beauty of snow from inside the house. But Sadie agrees that during weather like this we need to make our own fun indoors. So Sadie is spending some time with the penguin stuffed animals, which are part of a rotation of toys I keep in storage so that they seem fun and interesting when I bring them out once in a while.

We’re coming to the end of January now and here in this part of NJ we have hardly seen any snow. But apparently that will change this weekend with the arrival of a big blizzard. I’m honestly looking forward to some good snow fall. Yes, it will be annoying once the cars need to be cleared off and the sidewalks shoveled. But since it’s the weekend, all the manual labor can be scheduled for Sunday, leaving Saturday free to enjoy all the wonderful parts of a snowstorm. Sadie and I can run around and play in the snow. We can build a snowperson or snowdog or snowpenguin. We will definitely play some snowball catch. And when we’re cold and tired we can curl up under a blanket by the window and watch the peaceful flakes fall.

This week’s 52 Snapshots of Life theme is foolish. To go with this topic, I would like to share a few photos of what I think is Sadie’s most foolish habit – finding the most uncomfortable place for a nap. In these two photos, Sadie has worked hard to move all of the comfortable options out of the way to get to that cold, hard, wooden flooring. Why sleep on one of two dog beds or a nice soft carpet or even a comfy human bed when you can nap on some bamboo? I know dogs usually pick the floor when looking for a cool place to lie down, but Sadie will sometimes sleep like this in the middle of a blizzard in winter. To me this is the epitome of foolishness – I just don’t get it.

Before Sadie and I went walking around today I decided she needed to wear her boots. Everything is such a mess outside with snow and ice and slush and salt, that I thought it would be a good idea if her paws were protected. While in the house she fought me tooth and nail to get the boots off, but that didn’t work. Then she switched to her favorite form of passive protest: freezing like a statue and refusing to move. No food, no treats, me leaving, nothing at all will get her to move again unless I take off whatever is annoying her. But she didn’t win this time. I just picked her up, boots and all, and carried her outside. Then she saw all the snow and started sniffing the outside air and her doggy instincts took over. She walked and ran and sniffed and frolicked as usual, completely forgetting about those pesky boots.
